About Jon Lowe

Jon Lowe

Jon Lowe was born in Ipswich and began playing the guitar and writing songs at fifteen. His father managed the Gaumont Theatre in Ipswich, this Gave the young Lowe an insight into show business.

Jon sings at folk evenings in Suffolk and, while his two albums featured here are inspired by The Singing Postman, his repertoire is very much wider. He is very well known in East Anglia, particularly in Suffolk.

I met Jon in Grimsby on the very sad occasion on The Singing Postman’s funeral. He had travelled there with Jim Rowbotham another well known East Anglian musician. We later made contact and decided to make some recordings.

The subjects of the songs on Jon’s albums cover a somewhat broad spectrum; we relate tales of a guy who’s likely a member of the Mafia, the bar room politician, the vicar who’s getting good at going up and down as he has a three decker pulpit, the terrible hardship caused when the Old King’s Head 'bant' down. The Farmer’s Boy which was sung at every harvest supper by our ancestors. Add to this the pensioner who walks on the wild side and a little medley of songs in the pub. The Saffron Walden Circular Saw Club, the farmer’s night out, the tractor that’s always in front of you and the high street butcher selling 50/50 pies, one horse one rabbit plus many more and you have songs that you will never hear from a pop rock group!

We are happy to have Jon on our label.
