About Jess Cousins
Jess has worked as a session musician and harmony vocalist in London and the home counties as well as East Anglia. His voice is ideal for the big band, gospel and jazz types of songs which I write. This has enabled me to make the recordings which feature him on this website. The 'Strictly Come Dancing' programme has given ballroom dancing a real boost but it does not seem to have spawned a whole new wave of dance bands taking over from the rock groups that ousted from about the mid sixties. There is very good reason for this. While you can get away with twanging a guitar after not too many lessons, it takes a bit more acumen to play an instrument in a real dance band and you would also need to read music notation.
Generally, the quality of the songs played and sung in the ballroom needs to be a bit higher than most of what emanates from modern, popular radio stations ; although I have discovered that this is not always the case.
We have not set out to record the songs in strict ballroom tempos on our 'Songs From A Ballroom Singer' but feel that they are of the type that can easily be arranged and played in this manner for dancing. The gospel songs are mainly in the American, southern gospel style.
